Te Arai is indeed a popular destination for surfers, both locals and visitors, due to its stunning beaches and great waves. The two main beaches for surfing in the Te Arai region are Te Arai Point and Forestry.
Te Arai Point is the main surf beach and is located on the north side of Te Arai Point, on the east coast north of Auckland. The beach offers a range of waves catering to all levels of surfers, with the northern side of the point providing epic right-handers. The beach is also suitable for beginners, making it a great spot for surfers of all levels.
The second beach, Forestry, is located south of Te Arai Point near Auckland and is relatively uncrowded, making it a great option for surfers seeking a quieter surfing experience. The beach offers a series of beach break peaks and a fun left-hand point break, making it a suitable spot for beginners and intermediate surfers. However, it may lack excitement for expert surfers seeking more challenging waves.
To reach Te Arai, visitors can take the Auckland Northern Motorway/State Highway 1 north from Auckland over the Auckland Harbour Bridge, continue through Warkworth, and turn right onto Wayby Valley Road before reaching Wellsford. Turn right onto Whangaripo Valley Road, then take the first left onto Waiteitei Road, followed by a right turn onto Mangawhai Road, and then another right turn onto Te Arai Point Road that leads down to the beach.
Overall, Te Arai offers a beautiful area with fun waves suitable for surfers of all levels, and is only a short drive away from Auckland, making it a popular destination for those seeking a surf getaway.
Founded in our community, we have banded together to preserve and enhance the natural ecology of the Te Arai region.
As a group, we help trap pests, do regenerative planting, treat kauri for dieback, monitor rare birds (Fairy Tern, Australasian Bitterns), and remove plastic from our beaches.
We are involved in caring for Te Arai so people who venture to our beautiful regional park, beaches, walking tracks, golf courses, horse riding trails, and events can enjoy the pristine environment.
